The History of the Snow Cone
The snow cone is a flavored treat that is made up of shaved ice, along with syrup based flavoring. Usually, flavored to taste like fruit, snow cones have become one of the most beloved treats for young and old alike. They have become one the most desired treats during the hot summer months because of their ability to help people cool down and relax. There are many different types to choose from, like the “stuffed” cone, and ones that have vanilla ice cream inside of them. They are often times sold with a cup and a spoon, while others are designed to be eaten by hand, just like a ice ream cone would be eaten. There are many different types of snow cones flavors, and people are constantly trying to come up with the best. The most popular of them by far, is the one that has syrup in it. For whatever reason, snow cones and shaved ice tends to go together.
Ernest Hansen was the first person to patent for shaving blocks of ice in 1934, while living in New Orleans. Looking for a more sanitary way to shave blocks for the Italian ice, his invention was born. It was his wife that was the one to first add flavors to the ice, which usually came in fruity colors. New Orleans has kept the tradition alive of making frozen desserts that taste good, but have not been put through a blender to create a more marketable product. After all, the pioneers that arrived at the New Orleans region did not come to settle and adopt the American way of life, because they were too busy trying to survive themselves.
The first known attempt to create a more marketable product arose when Fredrick spaced his snow cone machines, and began to fill the demand. One of his innovations was to sweeten his snow balls with lollipop. What was truly revolutionary is that it was a completely new form of tongue blowing snowball. tongue blowing snowballs had been around since the 1800’s, but there were restrictions on what could be done to them. The New Orleans Bottled Water Company had aDivision named “snow ball” which was made from the snow falling on a flat surface. After a while, the snow ball was priced so high that nobody could afford them, so they were discontinued.
In the late 1970s, there was a chemical company inUtah named William Painter invented a product to market his invented invention as a means of purification. The system was called the “sugar stick”. It was made of sucrose and glucose and was the first of the sugar free toothpaste products that were marketed. Of course, this product was not rated as a long term purifier, but it was a step in the right direction.
The last company to bring out a breathable snow cone was Dole based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The straw was carefully designed to fit into a very small container. This small container was able to hold just the right amount of ice for the properpacking. The container used in the past was made of metal, like cans. The new ones are made of foam and are cage shaped. They have the same basic design as the tin can, but are marked with a stars and shaded green. The new tops of the pouches are designed to seal in the carbonation, keeping the drink fresh and keeping it from spoiling.
They only last about two and a half months at a minimum, and if you take them out after that, they are not nearly as clean and no longer edible. Other products have come out in the past few years that claim to extend the life of food beyond normal canning times. One of the most well known products is the “Suck-It” meat sealer. Everyone has seen one of those commercial videos where an employee jams the tube on a keg of beer and then seals it with the “Suck-It” meat sealer. The video is very well made and has folks across the globe wondering what they can do to their landennines. The truth is that this product is one of the best ways to keep your meat fresh and has been rated the top seller on Amazon.
